The Thrill of Victory, and the Agony of Defeat

Thursday, August 11th, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 7.21.33 AMOlympics time!  Yeah – remember that line at the beginning of a major network’s sports opening?  (If you’re too young and don’t, you did not grow up at the optimal time, I’m sorry.)  And if you did, do you remember that horrible skiing accident and the dumbbell dude lifting the weights like a baller?

That was me yesterday.  Not so much on the skiing and the weight lifting (in fact, me doing either of those would probably be an excellent set up for a comedy), but mentally that was me.  I had bad news and good.

The bad news: no moving forward with HSN.  Worst part: I don’t know why the #STEMPrincess series was rejected from HSN.  Timeline?  Cost?  I just don’t know.  It was a disappointment, to say the least.

The great news: the first #STEMPrincess Advisory Board met!  I literally have a pile of 200 sticky notes with ideas, but I also have the next golden ticket item that I’ll be pursuing around this 3 book series, thanks to the ladies of this board, who all were inspiring and passionate about helping out.

So…as you have your own thrills of victory and agonies of defeat, I just wanted to share a few with you this week of my own.  Because NOTHING drives me more nuts than the wantpreneurs out there making it look sooooo easy to make millions of bennies.  It’s just not that easy.  The hustle/struggle is hard, and real.  Hopefully, you’ll have some people who have your back, as I and my #STEMPrincesses do now!

Cheers – and can you help a girl out by up voting my two panel pickers for SXSW next spring? http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/60048 and http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/59975. Thanks!

#STEMPrincesses and #Girlpower: Onward!

Friday, July 22nd, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-07-22 at 6.51.53 AMEnergized by the girl #Ghostbusters power and the newly formed #STEMPrincess advisory board, I wanted to post a happy Friday update on some really cool action around getting more girls engaged in STEM education:

1. We have submitted the #STEMPrincess Trilogy to HSN’s show, American Dreams for consideration this week!  This is a show where HSN helps great product innovators share their work.  Super pumped about this so we can show there are actual products available to engage more girls in STEM education.  LOVE!  I also understand NBC is starting a show too, which is great, because we need more REAL entrepreneurs on television.  After all, you can be what you can see, and in this era of a lot of garbage floating around the media, it’s great to see those hard at work toiling to make the world a better place!

2. The first meeting of the amazing team of advisors on #STEMPrincess’s board will meet in August! Yay! Although, the room may not hold all that awesomeness at one time…we shall see.  And thanks to Kristin Eilenberg over at Lodestone Insights for hosting us! She’s clearly a brave woman…

3. Storytelling time for women – #SMDames16 is coming up! Did you get your tickets yet?

4. And speaking of more girlpower….I’m working on a brand new project that will be unfolding more over the next few months, which I hope will help the NEXT generation of women leaders get into even more C suites and boardrooms in the future.  What is that?  STAY TUNED!

6 Things I’m Working On Right Now

Sunday, June 26th, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-06-26 at 11.26.33 AM1. <-This crazy poster for AACP Innovations in Teaching coming up in Anaheim, CA. I got the brilliant idea to lay it out more in pictures, like a Pinterest board, rather than a traditional sci/tech poster. Although, it’s half-baked right now. Not digging the layout. The struggle is real.

2. Finishing touches on an article for HCLA on leadership and quitting.  Seemingly incongruent, but really important for strong leaders.

3. Thinking about my talk topic for #SMDames16. I think I’ve got that one in the bag. Will I see you there, Indy ladies?

4. Next few Pharmacy Podcasts – looking at indie ownership, aromatherapy, pharmacy benefit management as possible upcoming topics.

5. Next book–wildly, wildly different ideas here. I may need to try several at once, since they are so vastly different.

6. The STEM Princess Advisory Board – first time I’m setting up an ad board for a book, but I’m disturbed by this growing backlash against educating girls and young women in STEM. Announcement on the amazing board coming soon.
